Every generation of the Swift has sold on the same promise — it weighs nothing, it turns in immediately and it costs very little to keep on the road. The mild hybrid version does not break that formula, it just makes the fuel bill smaller.
The Handling Reason
At under a tonne, the Swift changes direction with an eagerness nothing else at this price offers. On the hill climb to Ella it stayed flat, the brakes never faded, and the gearing suited the constant elevation changes.
The trade-off is a firm ride over patched tar, though it never becomes uncomfortable at town speeds.
The Economy Reason
The 12V mild hybrid does not drive the wheels, but the stop-start and torque assist are enough to return 21.5 kmpl on our mixed loop, and closer to 24 kmpl on a steady expressway run.
Fuel cost aside, the Swift's real saving is in maintenance — filters, pads and suspension parts are among the cheapest of any import we handle.
The Ownership Reason
Swift demand in Sri Lanka has never dropped, which keeps resale predictable and makes it easy to sell in a hurry. Insurance premiums are low, and any garage can service it.
For a first car, or a second car that will do school runs and city errands, the numbers are hard to argue with.
