Toyota Aqua 4,000 km Review: The One With The Lowest Running Cost

Just a few weeks after the Toyota Aqua came into our garage, it quietly became the default key everyone reaches for. That means that while it is not doing 500 km long road trips, it is being drained on a regular basis for our documentation runs to Colombo Port, Orugodawatta and back to Horana — and it has been doing a great job for three reasons.
The Practical Reason
One thing we require the most in a support vehicle is space, and that is the reason even the Aqua was used as the support car on multiple occasions. The hatch packs the same level of space and practicality that customers really appreciate when they land one at the port.
On every single shoot, the boot is filled with our entire inspection kit — camera equipment, paperwork folders, a tyre inflator and a jump starter — and the rear seats still fold to swallow a spare bumper if a client needs one moved.
The Performance Reason
Next is the performance, or the entire hybrid powertrain if you look at it from a wider point of view. We want our support cars to be quick, they should not feel slow or sluggish while filming, and there should be enough performance to keep up with traffic on the expressway.
The Aqua has all of that. The electric motor fills in the low-end gap, the petrol engine wakes up above 80 kmph, and it is quicker and more relaxed than the numbers on paper suggest.
The Affordability Reason
Lastly, the one thing the Aqua does better than any other vehicle we have run is that it is light on the wallet. Most of our runs require a minimum of LKR 2,000 worth of fuel that gets used by the time we call it a day.
The Aqua, on the other hand, is mostly charged by its own regeneration and gets a full tank top-up for around LKR 12,500. With 27 kmpl in mixed running, our cost per kilometre works out to roughly LKR 17 — well under what an equivalent 1.5L petrol sedan costs to run in the same conditions.
Living With It In Sri Lanka
Parts availability is the quiet advantage. Every neighbourhood garage from Horana to Kandy knows the Aqua platform, hybrid battery reconditioning is widely available, and resale demand stays strong because buyers understand exactly what they are getting.
Not to mention the low running cost and the comfortable ride quality which keeps your mind and your body at ease. The term for the Aqua is coming to an end and soon we will publish a more detailed report of our experience with this hybrid, all its pros and cons, so stay tuned for that.
